The economy has turned many fashionistas into recessionistas. They haven’t given up their desire for designer clothing, shoes and accessories, they’re just shopping more discriminately at their favorite stores, or maybe venturing out to upscale resale shops for gently worn but still

desirable items.

When you consider that many designer looks are a few seasons ahead of the mainstream fashion curve to begin with, it doesn’t matter if an item was originally sold a year or two earlier. If you love it, it fits, the price is right and the quality is there, go for it.

And for those with great clothes and shoes that are gathering dust because they’re the wrong size, color or attitude, consigning earns money to get something new.

Rags Consignments

Boasting that it consigns thousands of items a month — 7,542 in August alone — this store has a large inventory and fast turnover. As you’d expect in a college town like Boulder, there’s a great selection of jeans, tops and sweaters, but Rags also caters to young moms and career women. Items are appealingly arranged by color and type of clothing, making it easy to browse. One recent visit uncovered separates from Cold- water Creek and Chico’s, jeans by Christopher Blue and Banana Republic jackets.

We have in some truly gorgeous bags right now!  This Gucci one takes the cake.  We honestly don’t think it has ever been used!  Originally over $1,200, at Rags for $798.  Perfect for any time of year.

Better off red! This dress (Ergofit by Rafaella, $109) provides enough structure so curvy women like Etheliya can go bright (for traditionalists, it also comes in black). Its hidden asset: a mega-stretchy lining that subtracts inches. “It makes me feel sexy and elegant,” says Etheliya, 27, a restaurant wine consultant. “In summer I’m a dress fanatic,” says boutique manager Lauren, 26. This short, high-waisted sack accentuated rather than diminished her pear shape.

After: A Well-Placed Print

Despite losing 50 pounds through healthy eating and exercise, Jainmy, a 32-year-old actress, was still in cover-up mode—”loose clothes to hide the love handles.”

After: A Fitted Knit

Her new, improved figure is gorgeously evident in a cleverly draped faux-wraparound dress (Norma Kamali for Wal-Mart, $20). Knits, provided they’re fairly substantial, have a nice way of gliding over and camouflaging less toned areas. “This dress hugs my waist, and that makes me look smaller,” she says. Tip: Side gathers create a diagonal line that visually whittles the midsection.

After: Color-Blocking

This slinky dress (Karen Millen, $340) minimizes hips and thighs by putting long sections of darker color on the outside and creating a lighter, brighter central section that streamlines the body. “I don’t like a lot of bareness,” says Jennifer, 30, a makeup artist. “Shape is sexier than skin!” Earrings, Julie Sandlau. Tip: The orange panel “paints” a slimming up-and-down line on the body.
