How can I make my boyfriend jeans look polished?

So easily you won’t believe it. First (obviously), select a pair that doesn’t have any holes. Then elevate the whole outfit with pieces that read as dressy, such as a sparkly cardigan or a pair of faux-snakeskin pumps. (Both would be even better!)

Can colored denim ever look sophisticated?

Yes! Stick to straight legs: The simple shape balances an out-there color. Add a ladylike top or jacket with lots of soft neutrals such as tan or gray. Colored denim pops too much against stark white, and another hot shade will seem vacationy.

Is it OK to wear skinny jeans even if I’m not a size 6?

It’s more than OK! Every woman can wear them; it’s more about what you wear with them. You’re going for an allover straight, angular look, so enhance narrow legs with tops that skim curves instead of clinging (nothing nipped in at the waist). Add heels, because they make you stride with confidence.

Denim doctor fit tips!

• Pick a pair that fits a bit tightly. Most jeans have spandex, so they’ll loosen. Keep them on for a full five minutes to know if they’re nicely snug or gasping-for-breath tight.
• Touch your toes in the fitting room. It’s a good test, along with sitting down, to detect (and avoid!) butt cleavage.
• Try on two sizes or even three. Sizing among brands can vary that much. You’ll eliminate irritating trips back to the racks.

Denim doctor care tips!

• Ask your tailor to match the thread color and stitch size of your jeans when hemming. He might not bother if you don’t specify.
• Prevent fading by washing jeans inside-out in cold water. Or do the exact opposite to make new blues look like old faves.
